Chennai station gets LED lighting

INDIA -- Chennai Central railway station has installed LED lighting as part of a push to reduce its carbon footprint and save money.

Southern Railway has replaced 2,388 conventional lights at the station with 2,402 LED lights of various wattages, at a cost of five million rupees (£61,000 or $78,000), the Times of India reported.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the new lights on Saturday.

The station expects to cut its carbon footprint by 262 tonnes a year.

Other improvements have also been made to the station including renovations to escalators, the booking office, and Wi-Fi.

The news comes as ministers suggest India could be the first country to replace all incandescent lamps with LEDs, as the state-owned energy efficiency business EESL steps up its efforts to promote energy-efficient lamps in the consumer market.
